Giving Smarter on Giving Day
Want to help students while maximizing your tax benefits? Consider these giving strategies.
Gifts from IRAs
If you are 73 years old or older, a “qualified charitable distribution” (or QCD) from your IRA may be the most tax efficient way to donate, regardless of whether you itemize. A QCD is a distribution from your IRA directly to the CSUSM Foundation that counts toward your required minimum distribution (RMD) but does not count as income, thus avoiding income tax. Many donors find that QCDs are more beneficial than giving cash and claiming charitable deductions. You can give up to $100,000 a year this way.
To make a QCD, simply direct your IRA custodian to make a distribution payable to the “CSUSM Foundation.” Our federal tax ID number is 80-0390564 and our mailing address is below. Please be sure to include your contact information and any special instructions on where to direct your gift.

Stock Gifts
Gifts of stock, bonds, mutual funds, or other long-term appreciated assets (assets you have owned for a year or longer that have increased in value) provide two tax benefits. You get a charitable deduction for the current fair market value of the gift, as well as avoid capital gains tax.
With the "charitable swap" strategy, you donate appreciated stock then buy new shares of the same stock. Your portfolio remains the same but you have removed the capital gain.
For stock transfer instructions or questions about giving strategies, please contact P. Vien Walker, Director of Planned Giving, at (760) 750-8138 or vwalker@csusm.edu.

CSUSM Giving Day is your day to support what you love about the University for 24 hours on November 28th, 2023 from 12:00a.m. to 11:59p.m. Held on global Giving Tuesday, CSUSM Giving Day is for everyone who loves CSUSM to join together in support of the University and maximize their impact through a matching gift.
Our goal is to raise more than last year! The more we raise, the more students will benefit from your generosity. We would also love to see at least 500 first-time donors so we can foster a growing community of people who love Cal State San Marcos.
